Beginner in Android Studio

Hi I have recently moved from VB onto Android studio for a new challenge and I'm currently teaching myself and learning where everything is. This might be bit of a simple question but when I create a new project then attempt to drag a widget onto the device e.g. Medium text it will display it on the relative layout and display it when debugging but will not display it on the static phone before debugging. Being a person from VB I'm simply use to dragging e.g. a label onto the form and instantly see it on the form ready for editing and moving it into position before debugging.
